Sashiko 刺し子

What is sashiko?
Originating in Japan, sashiko was developed as a practical method to repair and reinforce fabric. Sashiko, meaning “little stabs” in Japanese, is a centuries-old needle and thread technique rooted in an appreciation of the material, functionality, beauty, and tradition.
Color was also not allowed, particularly 200-300 years ago, so repetitive, geometric or natural patterns and emblems symbolising trade, location and protection were used. Sashiko strengthened the material used (Hemp) garments and imbued them with a timeless aesthetic.
At its core, Sashiko is an expression of resourcefulness and mindfulness. The stitches, typically made with white thread on indigo-dyed fabric, form motifs inspired by nature and cultural symbols. These designs embody the wabi-sabi philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence.
