Connectivity

Sashiko meaning “little stabs” in Japanese, is a centuries-old needle and thread technique rooted in an appreciation of the material, functionality, beauty, and tradition.

Originating in Japan, sashiko was developed as a practical method to repair and reinforce fabric, often the only resource available to working families. Hemp was the cheaper option for the fabric of clothing due to cotton being so expensive, yet its rough finish and being fine was not so protective, especially in the colder regions of Japan.  Cotton was also very expensive, so cheaper fabric options were required.

Colour was also not allowed particularly 200-300 years ago, so repetitive geometric or natural patterns were used as well as emblems symbolising trade, location and protection. Sashiko strengthened garments and imbued them with a timeless aesthetic.

At its core, sashiko is an expression of resourcefulness and mindfulness. The stitches, typically made with white thread on indigo-dyed fabric, form motifs inspired by nature, seasons, and cultural symbols. These designs embody the wabi-sabi philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence.

Inhouse our threads, needles and patterns come from Daruma (Yotoka Ltd) and Olympus.  A small selection of Buaisou.
